Case Study 02 Windscreen Repair Kit

From Specialist Resin
to a Market-Ready
DIY Windscreen Repair Kit

A Malaysian automotive glass repair brand approached Moomol to develop a complete DIY windscreen repair kit for the consumer market. While the kit included the tools required to perform the repair, its real performance depended on something much less visible — the resin.

The tools made it a kit.
The resin made it work.

01 / The Brief

The client wasn't looking for a collection of tools. They needed a complete repair product.

A DIY windscreen repair kit needs more than the physical tools required to perform the repair. The components need to work together as a complete system, the repair material needs to deliver the required performance, and the finished product needs to be simple enough for consumers to understand and use.

Moomol was engaged to help turn that requirement into a complete, market-ready product.

02 / The Critical Component

The most important part of the kit wasn't the tool.

The repair tools make the process possible, but they do not determine the quality of the repair on their own. At the centre of the product was the repair resin — the critical material responsible for filling the damaged area of the windscreen.

03 / Developing the Resin

Start with the right material. Then build the right formulation.

Rather than relying on a generic repair resin, the project used specialist resin material sourced from the United States. The material was then prepared by the manufacturer using a confidential proprietary composition for the intended windscreen repair application.

04 / Sample Validation

First sample. First test. Approved.

Product development does not always require multiple rounds of reformulation. When the first resin sample was completed, it was delivered to the client for application testing. The client tested the resin and was satisfied with its performance. No adjustment to the formulation was required.

05 / Building the Complete Product

A good resin still needed a complete system around it.

Once the critical material had been validated, the project moved from individual components towards a complete consumer product. The resin was combined with the tools and accessories required to create a complete DIY windscreen repair kit.

06 / Packaging & User Experience

A DIY product has to do more than work. It has to explain itself.

Unlike a product used exclusively by trained technicians, a DIY repair kit needs to guide the end user through the process. Moomol supported the development of both the product packaging and the user instruction manual, helping turn the components into a consumer-ready product.

07 / Commercialisation

Approved once. Built to be produced repeatedly.

With the resin approved and the complete kit defined, the project moved into commercial production. Materials, components, packaging and production had to come together consistently for every order.

08 / What Happened Next

The strongest validation wasn't the first order. It was the fourth.

The project did not end after the first commercial production run. The client continued returning for additional production, with each order consisting of approximately 5,000 packs.

According to the client, each batch was typically depleted within approximately three months, creating continued demand for the next production run. To date, the product has progressed through four production orders.

A successful sample proves the product can work.
A fourth order proves the market still wants it.

09 / Moomol's Role

More than sourcing the parts.

The project required coordination across material sourcing, manufacturer capability, formulation, product components, packaging, user instructions and commercial production.
